The sixteenth season of *One Piece* aired on Fuji Television in Japan from January 6, 2013, to January 12, 2014. Toei Animation produced it under the direction of Hiroaki Miyamoto. The story follows Monkey D. Luffy and his Straw Hat Pirates, as with the rest of the series. The season adapts material from the end of the 66th manga volume to the end of the 70th, covering the "Punk Hazard" arc. The Straw Hats answer a distress signal from Punk Hazard and find Caesar Clown, a former Navy scientist, conducting experiments on children. Luffy and a group of prisoners join forces to stop Caesar and his underlings. An anime-only arc, "Caesar Retrieval," follows the Heart–Hat alliance leaving Punk Hazard, as they try to rescue Caesar from a mysterious figure to take down Doflamingo and Kaido. Two opening themes were used: "We Go!" by Hiroshi Kitadani (up to episode 590) and "Hands Up!" by Kōta Shinzato for the rest. Funimation's original simulcast did not use "Hands Up!" due to licensing issues, but these were later resolved for the official release. The first of twelve DVD compilations came out on January 8, 2014, and the last on June 4, 2014. In North America, Funimation recategorized the season as most of "Season Ten" for its DVD release, with Australian sets renamed Collection 48 through 51.
